In chronic venous insufficiency, the valves in your veins do not close properly, so while some blood does make its way back to your heart, some remains in the lower extremities because of gravity. Your lower legs, ankles, and feet can become chronically swollen and stained a tan or brown color. Sometimes, the skin can become thicker and a build-up of fibroses can occur so the affected area feels very firm to the touch.
Treatment varies depending on the presentation and severity of this conditioning. Manual Lymph Drainage treatments will always be a part of treatment, however the need for multi-layer bandaging or not will depend on whether or not you have wounds and edema and/or lymphedema along with CVI.
